Pause for a moment and breathe in the history of St. Hermes Basilica and Crypt. Admire the elegant choir stalls and the equestrian statue of Saint Hermes (patron of the mentally ill), or listen to the Carillon with its 49 bells. Together they weigh no less than 12 tons! This 'Basilica Minor' or 'smaller basilica', a title it acquired in 2019, is open every day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can only climb the tower by appointment. It is definitely worth braving the 208 steps, because you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the city and its hilly surroundings.

The crypt of Ronse is unique in Belgium and should not be missed under any circumstances. The crypt is a typical feature of Romanesque-Gothic architecture in Western Europe and serves as a repository for the relics of a local saint. For Ronse this is Saint Hermes, patron of the nervous and mentally ill.

In the Middle Ages Ronse was an important religious center. Pilgrims came from far and wide to ask for help and healing. Saint Hermes is depicted as a Roman officer on his horse. Above the shrine in St. Hermes Basilica is his life-size equestrian statue. The crypt is a unique example of architectural unity. The eleventh-century structure has 32 columns, beautiful stone walls, a hidden burial chamber and a well with bathrooms for the sick visitors.

When you visit, you not only get an overview of the building history of the crypt, but also of the different phases in the treatment of the pilgrim in search of healing.

The Carillon in the St. Hermes Tower has 49 bells that together weigh a good 12 tons. The best places to listen are the Albert Park and the terraces on the Kleine Markt. Listen every Saturday evening at 8:30 PM from July to mid-September. and from October to July every first and third Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
