Hiking

This square in the old town with its fountain is named after the cantonal police commander Paul Grüninger (1891 to 1972). In 1938 and 1939, Grüninger saved hundreds of Jewish and other refugees from persecution by the Nazis. To do so, he disregarded clear instructions from the federal government and enabled people to cross the border in the St. Galler Rheintal. In 1939 Grüninger was dismissed without notice and convicted in court in 1940. It was not until 1995, 23 years after his death, that he was rehabilitated by an acquittal by the St. Gallen district court.
