Gallusplatz

The spacious Gallusplatz is located in the core of St. Gallen's old town and is a popular meeting place for both locals and holidaymakers. A fountain from 1936 is reminiscent of Saint Gallus, a mighty tree provides pleasant shade in summer and many restaurants around the square invite you to enjoy a small or large meal.

The Gallusplatz west of the collegiate church is the only large free square in the old town where an annual 'Christkindlimarkt' and a monthly flea market are held. It is framed by late Gothic and Baroque facades and is the site of the oldest settlement in the monastery. One of the richest merchants in St. Gallen - Hans Schimpf - marked his prosperity with the town house in 1590.
