The double splitting hut was added to the GDR's list of industrial monuments as early as the 1980s. By 1993, the building had been saved from complete decay and extensively renovated with the help of numerous support measures and rescue operations.
The rebuilt historic splitting hut from 1898 is a core piece of today's monument ensemble. It testifies to the complex processing of the raw stone that had already been extracted and mined, as well as the special quality of the Lehesten slate. The use of the splitting tools (sledgehammer and splitting chisel) and the slate shears is clearly demonstrated during guided tours. The Lehesten slate can be split thinly and even cut with slate shears.

As an authentic facility, the striking double-slit hut impressively conveys the processing techniques of the blue gold. At the beginning of the 1980s, the double gap hut was included in the list of industrial monuments of the GDR. Until 1993, the building was saved from final decay with numerous funding measures and rescue operations.

A must for anyone interested in the old tradition of slate mining in Thuringia! Take a look around the Thuringian villages and towns - all the slate houses! Weatherproof and durable. Here it was dismantled and processed. Today extraction is too expensive in Germany - because of the people! The slate now comes from China & Co.
