Until the end of the 19th century, the Oulettes de Gaube glacier formed a single glacier with that of the Petit Vignemale.
Very low in altitude for a glacier, the Oulettes de Gaube combine the particularities which allow it to exist at only 2,400 meters. Its full north exposure is part of this, but also the protective envelope of the Vignemale, which further reduces contact with the sun. The winter snows that accumulate on Vignemale also contribute to its survival. In fact, many small “avalanches” feed the glacier every year.

The Vignemale is imposing and eye-catching. Its glacier has become so small, its days are unfortunately numbered. This small cirque is very pretty, but getting there still requires good physical condition.
