The term Ilhéou comes from the Gascon to designate the gap. And judging from the location of the lake, its name is easily understood. Indeed, Lake Ilhéou is nestled in the hollow of a massif and surrounded by a string of peaks that tease the 3,000 meters.

From Lac d'Ilheou you can either descend to Cauterets from the Col d'Ilheou or take the very nice path to Refuge Wallon. I walked this route in 1983 and can highly recommend it because of the beautiful mountain lakes (Lacs de l'Embarrat, Lac du Pourtet, Lac Nere) along the way.
