The Haaren rises behind Borbeck near Wiefelstede. It is initially a small stream and then a real river all the way to Oldenburg. When there is a lot of rainfall, the Haaren rises quickly and often overflows its banks in front of the Haaren Wasseracht retention basin. Thanks to the rain retention basin, flooding in the city of Oldenburg is a thing of the past.
