The Haaren, which rises in northwest Lower Saxony on the Oldenburg-East Frisian Geest, has a length of 23.8 km and a catchment area of 115 km². Of these, 75 km² are in the Ammerland district and around 40 km² are in the city of Oldenburg. It is the only river in the Ammerland Geest that drains via the Hunte into the left-hand catchment area of the Weser. Today, the entire water system of the Haaren is very unnatural and structurally heavily modified. The Haaren-Wasseracht, based in Petersfehn, is responsible for water maintenance.

      The Peace Church

The Methodist congregation, founded in Oldenburg in 1858, had its church hall in Gottorpstrasse from 1865. As the congregation grew steadily, the meeting house soon proved to be too small. Just 20 years later, a new building was planned. The congregation wanted a representative building site in the city center. The choice fell on the Oppermann Garden on the newly created Peace Square. The plot had already been earmarked for a representative building when Peace Square was being planned and had become an object of speculation. The councilor and architect Carl Spieske was commissioned to sell the plot. In 1893, the Methodist congregation acquired the plot for the then immense sum of 28,000 marks. Spieske had been assured that he would have to build the church and preacher's house.
