The Lappan was already being used for events with a national impact around 1900. In February and March 1911, court art dealer Karl G. Oncken and city architect Adolf Rauchheld hosted Oldenburg's first architecture exhibition on the theme of "country house", in which around 40 artists exhibited designs and models, including nationally and internationally known architects (e.g. the Berlin studio of Peter Behrens, Fritz Schumacher from Hamburg, Wilhelm Kreis from Düsseldorf, Emil Högg from Bremen, Gustav Schmoll called Eisenwerth from Munich, Hendrik Petrus Berlage from Amsterdam and Samuel de Clerq from The Hague).

The Lappan was originally a retirement and nursing home with a chapel for the poor, which was built in the middle of the 14th century. It was first mentioned as the “Holy Spirit House” in January 1351 and is therefore considered the oldest building from the Middle Ages in Oldenburg. The Order of the Brothers of the Holy Spirit made a significant contribution to the development of the hospital system. In 1467/68 the chapel received the striking Gothic brick tower, which still rises on the northern edge of the city center towards Brunneneck (known locally as Lefferseck).
