"International contemporary art from important private collections, Europe's largest collection of artist publications.
In the middle of the Weser, in the heart of the Hanseatic city, lies the Weserburg, Bremen's museum for modern art. It is one of the largest museums in Germany and enjoys a high international reputation. The guarantee for the vitality of the Weserburg is a construction that is unique in Europe: private collectors give parts of their collections to the building. A concept that sets the Weserburg apart from traditional art museums.
Various focal points are selected from several European collections, which provide a personal and diverse insight into the world of art. In the special atmosphere of the historic building, the private collector's individual passion for art is combined with the museum's scientific perspective.
In constantly changing presentations of the renowned collection holdings and in large special exhibitions, the exciting developments in art from the 1960s to today. In an impressive tour, the visitor does not follow a guideline along art historical developments, but rather the dialogues between the individual works of art. The appeal lies in the interaction of the individual private collections. The juxtaposition and coexistence of different collection concepts under one roof enables one to experience contemporary art from ever new, sometimes surprising perspectives as one walks through the exhibition rooms.
Almost a museum within a museum - and at the same time much more than that - is the study center for artist publications with the "Archive for Small Press & Communication". The study center includes more than 100,000 published works of art from all over the world, including a wide variety of printed products from books to stamps, as well as sound art and multimedia editions. It is therefore home to the largest and most important collection of artist publications in Europe since the 1960s. Overall, a varied accompanying program, consisting of weekly tours, concerts, lectures, performances, artist talks and film screenings, make the Weserburg in its four former warehouses one of the liveliest places in the city." The Weserburg, Bremen's home for international contemporary art, is located on the Teerhof Island. The museum's home, the four brick warehouses on the Teerhof, which housed the Bremen coffee roasting company Schilling until the 1980s, make the Weserburg one of the most extraordinary art venues in Germany.
