In the 12th century there was only a small, simple church in the Romanesque arched style. It had the entrance door for the men on the south side and that for the women on the north side. There were no church chairs or benches, mass was received standing or kneeling. The church remained in this simplicity until the late Middle Ages. Around 1450 it was extended to the east. A vestibule and finally a tower were added to the south. But the foundation was not stable enough, at some point it gave in to the heavy weight. The tower cracked and had to be propped up. The result is the construction of the heavy buttress arch, which stands at an angle from the corner - the only one of its kind in Denmark.
