The former villa of the "painter prince" Franz von Lenbach, which was opened to the public for the first time after the artist's death in 1904. In 1929 it became the Municipal Gallery, a museum of the city of Munich. The Lenbachhaus (or officially "the Municipal Gallery in the Lenbachhaus and Kunsthaus Munich") owes its reputation as an internationally important museum to its large and unique collection of works from the Blue Rider era, e.g. by Kandinsky and Münter, which were previously on display in Munich at the Haus der Kunst.
