The “Hohes Elbufer” recreation area is listed in the official list of all nature reserves in Schleswig-Holstein under number 142. It is located on the Elbe between the towns of Geesthacht-Tesperhude and Lauenburg and is 469 hectares in size.

The landscape is shaped by the Ice Age. The Hohe Geest was created by glaciation during the Saale Glacial Period between 300,000 and 130,000 years ago. The sand ridge, which is over 80 meters high in places, drops steeply down to the Elbe glacial valley.

Hiking

The hiking trails start in the Kuhgrund nature reserve near Lauenburg. It is about 3.5-4 km to the "Alte Salztrasse" near Schnakenbek. There is the "Alter Sandkrug" restaurant. alter-sandkrug.de/5/home You can take a break here.

It is another 5-6 km to Tesperhude. There you will find various places to stop for refreshments on the Elbe.

Tours of 8 to 25 km in length are possible in this area if you plan a circular tour.
