Even though there is still a lot of room for improvement aesthetically at this point, it still looks better today than it did in the 1960s. It wasn't until February 23, 1966 that Schildergasse became the first pedestrian zone in Cologne. Until then, heavy traffic was common there too.

Art should also be exhibited in the new, car-free area. A modern sculpture fountain was planned for this corner on Schildergasse. In 1971, a competition was announced at the newly built Cologne University of Applied Sciences. The then 24-year-old Harald Frehen won this competition. His design envisaged a slim, slightly twisted granite column, which was ceremoniously inaugurated on May 6, 1972.

The beer fountain is reminiscent of the brewers' guild house

The beer fountain was financed by Matthias Harzheim KG, the most important beer wholesaler in Germany at the time. The fountain is intended to be reminiscent of the former Mirweiler house, which was just a few meters away. The brewers' guild house was there until 1927. And this explains the name of the fountain: Kölsch actually flowed from the beer fountain. At least at the inauguration. This was made possible by a hidden, underground pipe that was laid to a refrigerated truck parked in a side street. Unfortunately, this pipe was rarely used and today only water flows from the well.

At this point / I would like to say something quickly / about the source,

whereby it corresponds to the art of poetry / if this 'source' is a 'fountain':

To quote the incomparable humorist Heinz Erhardt (1909 – 1979), who was known to a wide audience for his wit and “another poem”, with one of his rare shaking rhymes:

“The four-legged friend only drinks water

        “People think beer is finer.”
