Represents the legendary fishmonger Margarethe Flint, died in 1952.
January 3, 2018
Margarethe Pape was born in the Old Country in 1861 – poor, and she will remain so for the rest of her life. In Stade she supports herself and her illegitimate child as a seamstress.
She will marry three times and have a total of six children, most of whom will grow up in the poorhouse. Her men are dying to her. With her third husband, Ludwig Flint, she opened a fish shop in Stade and drove fish in a pram, in which she had put a zinc tub, to the horse market for sale - always followed by a entourage of cats.
Margarethe Flint stood with her fish in the streets of the old town until she was 87 years old. Boys annoy her, calling after her "Mother Flint with a stint". When she dies at the age of 90, the people of Stade seem to be missing something. It was so inseparable from the cityscape that the people of Stade erected a monument to “Mother Flint” at the Old Port.
