The fountain dates back to 1756. The Görlitz vernacular calls it the
Gabeljürgen. Very nice fountain in front of the old town hall.

In Roman mythology, NEPTUNE, who was honored with this fountain in a central location in the city center of Görlitz, is the god of the sea; his Greek counterpart is POSEIDON. Both are usually depicted with a trident - in paintings or as statues - which is their common trademark, so to speak. In contrast to his Greek "counterpart", a planet is named after NEPTUNE.
