The tower, which dates back to the 13th century, is the most massive of the Görlitz city towers, with over five meters thick in places. It is 46 meters high. The historic city coat of arms on the front of the tower is a striking feature.

The tower was built as part of the city expansion in 1250.
The tower has largely retained its appearance over the centuries.
From 1974 to 1999, the students at the engineering college in Görlitz-Zittau celebrated their parties in the upper rooms. From 2000 to 2006 the tower was unused.
