Nideggen is a beautiful little town with a mostly preserved city wall and gates. Definitely worth seeing!

Some of the old buildings have been preserved in Nideggen. The visible signs of the former city fortifications are the large gates. If you walk up towards the castle in the old town, you come through the Düren Gate. In the south is the Zülpicher Tor and in the west is the Nyckstor. The Brandenberg Gate in the east no longer exists.

The first documented mention of the town of Nideggen as Nydeche came in 1190, when a settlement was built around the castle of the counts of Jülich, which had been built recently. In 1313 Nideggen received city rights and the construction of the city wall began.

Ten towers, a moat in front, three gates, the Nyckstor is not mentioned here because it actually belongs to the castle

The Düren and Zülpicher gates are still preserved today. In 1541, Emperor Charles V managed to overcome the city wall; it was no match for modern artillery; now the wall and gates fell into disrepair and remained ruins; In 1689 the French destroyed large parts of the city in the War of the Palatinate Succession.

In 1765, the upper floor of the Düren Gate - originally a two-story double tower gate - was demolished and reconstructed at the end of the 19th century. The Zülpicher Tor is a three-story tower gate, the top floor of which was demolished in 1810 and - like the Dürener Tor - was rebuilt in 1896.
