The Bochum town hall, designed by the Darmstadt architect Karl Roth, was opened in 1931 after five years of construction. It is one of the most important representative buildings in the Ruhr area and is a listed building: a strictly symmetrical floor plan, combined with a simple facade design and a large inner courtyard give the building a timeless aesthetic splendor. In 1979, the large cast steel bell was installed on the town hall forecourt. It was originally cast by the Bochum Association for the 1867 World Exhibition and rung at the opening. It has a diameter of 3.13 meters and weighs 15,000 kilograms. Since the move to the town hall, its clapper, a steel ball hanging on four ropes, has disappeared. But the bell can no longer ring due to damage from the Second World War.

"The Bochum town hall, designed by the Darmstadt architect Karl Roth, was opened in 1931 after five years of construction. It is one of the most important representative buildings in the Ruhr area and is a listed building: a strictly symmetrical floor plan, combined with a simple facade design and a large inner courtyard give the building a timeless aesthetic splendor.
The office building, which was ultra-modern at the time it was built and which now houses a large part of the Bochum city administration, is externally modeled on the Spanish monastery in Escorial in the style of the "ornamental Spanish Renaissance". The town hall contains one of the few paternosters in Bochum, which is currently back in operation after a forced break of several years. In 1979, the large cast steel bell was erected on the town hall forecourt, which was originally cast by the Bochum Association for the 1867 World Exhibition and rung at the opening. It has a diameter of 3.13 meters and weighs 15,000 kilograms. Since the move to the town hall, its clapper, a steel ball hanging on four ropes, has disappeared.
