No matter which director, Zadek, Peymann, Hausmann or Simons, there were always top-class plays that sparked discussions in Bochum.

"The theater was completed in 1953 after a two-year construction period. The architect responsible was the government master builder Gerhard Graubner, professor at the Technical University of Hanover.

The old city theater, which was destroyed in an air raid in 1944, stood in the same place. However, parts of the wall of the stage house, the foundations and the reinforced concrete wreath standing on supports were preserved. Therefore, it made sense to integrate this construction into the new building, which ultimately also determines the cubature of this building.

A theatrical innovation, which was later also taken up by other theaters, was the "iron curtain", which was arranged in the area in front of the front stage. This made the area in front of the stage, which had not been decorable until then, playable and thus a greater closeness to the audience was created.

The building has almost original equipment in the publicly accessible area: whether lighting, furniture, wall cladding - the interior of the building bears the design language of the 1950s in all details. "

The Bochum theater is one of the most important theaters in the German-speaking world, and as a building it is one of the great achievements of architecture in the 1950s.
Building contractor Clemens developed the rural district of Ehrenfeld and in 1907 initiated the construction of a vaudeville theater »Orpheum«, later »Apollo«. That turned out to be false speculation. In 1915 it was converted into the newly founded municipal theatre. In the 1920s to 1940s it experienced its first artistic heyday under the direction of Saladin Schmitt. In 1944 the theater was badly damaged. The reconstruction as »Bochum Playhouse« was completed in 1953 with nationwide attention.
Architect Gerhard Graubner designed the auditorium based on the model of the amphitheater. For the first time in a German theater, the Iron Curtain was placed in front of the proscenium. As a result, the front stage area, which was previously not allowed to be decorated for fire safety reasons, could be used. The game action moved closer to the spectators.
The red clinker of the facade was considered by the architect to be "a jewel of the Ruhr area", the circular segment of the front is intended to enclose the city in its continuation. Curved lines, slender columns and light colors predominate in the building. The »tulip lamps«, which later became widespread, had their design premiere here.
Great visitor interest under artistic director Hans Schalla (1949 – 1972) led to the construction of the Kammerspiele in 1966. Artistic director Peter Zadek (1972 – 1979) successfully broke the rigid rules of theater culture. He also set up a third venue in the former theater restaurant, the »Theater Untertage«.
