Desert plants had deep roots during the Triassic period. This is the only safe and easy way to see them as fossils in the area.

Ancient plant root fossils called Rhizoconcretions. These fossils are the preserved remains of plants that grew on the banks of rivers in the Triassic Period, when the area was a desert.
The fossils are mineralised molds and casts of the ancient root systems, and they show that the landscape was once hot and semi-arid. The presence of these fossils, along with some fish and amphibian remains, indicates that the Otter Sandstone dates back to the Middle Triassic
