The small Van de Velde building on the opposite side
was built from 1905 to 1906 according to plans by Henry van de Velde for the »Grand Ducal Saxon School of Applied Arts« and used by the »Staatliches Bauhaus zu Weimar« between 1919 and 1925. Today it is the seat of the Faculty of Art and Design and the teaching building of the Bauhaus University Weimar.

Inside the Van-de-Velde building, the unusual lighting of the central staircase with its wide spiral staircase and the three reconstructed wall paintings by Oskar Schlemmer, which were created for the Bauhaus exhibition in 1923, are particularly interesting.

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is a university in Weimar that specializes in design and technology. Its origins go back to the Grand Ducal Saxon Art School founded in 1860 and the State Bauhaus founded in 1919.

From 1904 to 1911 the main building of the Bauhaus University Weimar was built according to plans by Henry van de Velde. It is one of the most important art school buildings of the turn of the century and was the founding site of the Bauhaus in 1919.

In 1999, the renovation under the direction of the architect Thomas van den Valentyn was largely restored to its original state. Today the building is used by the Bauhaus University Weimar through the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism and the President's office.
