The old town of Lichtenfels has retained its typical Franconian character to this day. In the 14th century, the town was surrounded by a ring wall with three gate towers: the Bamberg Gate, the Kronach Gate (both are still preserved today) and the Coburg Gate. Parts of the old town wall are still visible today. Of the five defensive towers, the "Red Tower" is still standing.
The core of the Lower or Bamberg Gate dates back to the 14th century, the upper floor and the roof were added in 1618.
In commemoration of the Second Margrave War, especially the year 1553, a cannonball was walled into the field side in 1666.
In 1830/31, the gatehouse was demolished and the passageway was widened.
