The Lichtenfels City Palace is in a prominent position above the roofs of the old town and was built in 1555 by Caspar von Sternberg against the resistance of the population.

The Lichtenfels City Palace is high above the roofs of the old town.

The people saw it as a "fortress" and turned to the Prince-Bishop of Bamberg with their fears. He supported the citizens' petition, but the new building had already reached an impressive size. This led to the illegal construction being legalized. In return, von Sternberg had to guarantee that the new palace would not be fortified.

The building has had an eventful history. Depending on the owner, it was used as a noble residence and a prince-bishop's lodging house, then as a granary, as a wine merchant's warehouse, as a drying room for herbs and finally as a material warehouse for a basketry company.

In 1970, the city palace was purchased by the city of Lichtenfels and reopened in 1991 after more than 15 years of construction and restoration. Today, it stands as an example of an exceptionally high-quality restored monument. The Lichtenfels city palace is used for conferences, seminars, cultural and gastronomic purposes and has become an integral part of the social life of the German basket town.
