The monument to the reformer Martin Luther, who visited Dresden in 1516 and 1517, is located on Dresden's Neumarkt, directly in front of the Frauenkirche. The monument was created by the sculptor Adolf von Donndorf (1835-1916) and cast in bronze in the Dresden art and bell foundry Christian Albert Bierling. The base is made of marble and bears, among other things, Luther's name in gold letters. A clay model by Ernst Rietschel (1804-1861), which Ernst Rietschel (1804-1861) had made for the Luther memorial in Worms, was used for the head of the monument, although it was not used there. Ernst Rietschel was one of the most famous sculptors of his time and teacher of Adolf von Donndorf. To commemorate Reformation Day in 1885, the Dresden memorial, named after the Luther memorial in Washington D.C. is considered the second copy of the Worms Luther monument, inaugurated after donations for such a statue in Dresden had been called for since 1883. The monument was damaged during the bombing of Dresden in February 1945 and could only be re-erected in 1955. Until the comprehensive restoration between December 2003 and November 2004, the statue of Luther in front of the ruins of the destroyed Frauenkirche served as a memorial against war and destruction. Today it is part of the ensemble of the newly designed Neumarkt.

The statue is right next to the Frauenkirche. It was created by the sculptor Adolf von Donndorf and cast in bronze in the Bierling foundry in Dresden. Definitely worth seeing.

Magnificent large square, looking at the Martin Luther statue and the church as a backdrop. Like the Theaterplatz, the Schlossplatz and the Altmarkt, the Neumarkt in Dresden is one of the most important squares in Dresden's old town.

The Martin Luher monument with the Frauenkirche in the background is a great photo opportunity.

Adolf Donndorf created the monument to the reformer next to the Frauenkirche in 1885 - using a head designed by his teacher Ernst Rietschel for his Luther monument in Worms, but not used.
                  Luther second-hand, so to speak!

Especially in the evening when it is quieter and the place is well lit and manageable, worthwhile.

Very nice monument on the Neumarkt in front of the Frauenkirche. It's actually quite practical, because if you want to take a picture of the church without the huge advertising tarpaulin on one side, Luther is there to help and cover you up.😅😉👍📸

Although Luther only visited the city in person twice, in April 1516 and July 1517, he is omnipresent. For example, there is the Luther Oak in the Dresdner Heide, not far from the Wolfhügel, which was planted on October 28, 1917 to mark the 400th anniversary of the Reformation. The Luther monument on the Neumarkt by the Frauenkirche is probably known to most people, but the Luther stone at the Hotel de Saxe perhaps not so much. Parts of the wrought iron fence that once surrounded the monument are now stored in the lapidarium on Nürnberger Strasse in Dresden-Plauen. At the foot of the 62-meter-high tower of the Striesen Church of Reconciliation there is a life-size figure of the reformer, which resembles the monument in front of the Frauenkirche in every detail. The theologian, who was born in Eisleben, is also well represented in the Neustadt. Here the church, the square on which it stands, and an adjacent street bear his name. A statue stands at the house at Martin-Luther-Platz 5. In Pieschen, portraits of Luther and his comrade Melanchthon can be seen on the facade of a house on Mohnstrasse.
