The West Town Hall is one of the most impressive examples of representative buildings of the late 19th century in Karlsruhe. The dome of the corner building was considered a tourist attraction.

The social welfare office is located in the West Town Hall.

On behalf of the Karlsruher Lebensversicherung, Adolf Hanser, at that time one of the most successful younger architects of the Grand Duchy of Baden, created the prestigious office building between 1896 and 1898 in the formal canon of Italian Renaissance palazzi. The building was later expanded twice and added to the list of monuments in the 1980s.

The house with the representative sandstone façade was built from 1895 to 1898 in neo-renaissance style to designs by the architect Adolf Hanser as the administrative building of the General Supply Agency. After numerous renovations and extensions, the building became the property of the city of Karlsruhe. During the occupation after the Second World War, the building was confiscated by the French and later by the US occupying power.
