For centuries, the Schulensbroek was one large natural flood area, which was flooded several times a year. The fertile soil was interesting for farmers. In the mid-1970s, the Schulensmeer was dug: on the one hand for the construction of the E314, and on the other hand as a holding basin to collect excess water. The Schulensmeer is located in the west of the Belgian province of Limburg, in the valley of the Demer on the territory of Herk-de-Stad and Lummen. It is named after the church village of Schulen, which lies on the road between Hasselt and Diest.
