The Cistercian abbey of Mariënrode acquired a piece of land in 1420 to build a water mill on the Velpe river. The large, picturesque mill was not built until the end of the 17th century - beginning of the 18th century. The wheel catches the water from below and is therefore an undershot wheel. Documents show that in 1920 the mill ground 75,000 kg of grain. It was operated until 1961, but still has all the rights to grind again. The mill has been in the possession of the Van den Hove-d'Ertsenrijck family for almost 200 years.
