The Rotem Mill, or Rotemse Mill, is a beautiful watermill in a lovely area in Halen, not far from the museum of the 1914 battle.
Quote: "The Rotemse Mill is a watermill on the Velpe, located at Gidsenstraat 24 in Rotem, a hamlet of Halen. This undershot mill served as a corn mill. The mill was commissioned by the nuns of the Abbey of Mariënrode, probably shortly after 1422. Research has shown that the original mill was destroyed and that the oldest parts of the current mill date from 1646. Construction continued until 1715. In 1777, a new south facade was built. In 1924, a tower was built against the mill to serve as the owner's summer residence. His son moved in permanently and added a wing. The mill continued operating until 1961, when the wheel's axle broke. The layout was retained and In 2005, the mill and its surroundings were designated as protected monuments and village views, respectively. In 2009, a fish ladder was installed at the mill. On this occasion, the mill wheel was removed. The brick mill house is still original. Iron sandstone has been incorporated in several places. The workings are still intact. A beam bears the date 1760. The transmission mechanism is unique, as it used windmill technology: the grinding mechanism is driven from above, which is unusual for watermills. The tower-like structure dates from the 20th century. The service building across the street consists of fossilized half-timbered construction.

The Cistercian abbey of Mariënrode acquired a piece of land in 1420 to build a water mill on the Velpe river. The large, picturesque mill was not built until the end of the 17th century - beginning of the 18th century. The wheel catches the water from below and is therefore an undershot wheel. Documents show that in 1920 the mill ground 75,000 kg of grain. It was operated until 1961, but still has all the rights to grind again. The mill has been in the possession of the Van den Hove-d'Ertsenrijck family for almost 200 years.
