The city of Wolfenbüttel owes its name to the former moated castle of the same name. Where the moated castle once stood, the castle now adorns the cityscape. And the Wolfenbüttel waterways of that time are no longer available, with a few exceptions. A signposted tour, panel 1 to panel 19, shows the places where water used to shape our cityscape. The brewery guild house, built around 1600, was later filled with bricks in contrast to the town hall. The Oker flowed along the front of the building as about four meters wide channel.
The bridge south of the Brauergildenhaus was one of the most important in the city: it combined the new with the old Heinrichstadt, the wood market with the Kornmarkt. It was covered with cobblestones around 1720 and had a right-angled extension in the middle, as well as the Dammtor Bridge.
Already in the 15th century, a western city gate stood here, which was expanded under Duke Julius in 1581 as an inner city fortification with stone vaults.

The brewery building was built around the year 1600. The Oker flowed here as an approx. 4 meter wide canal along the front of the building. The bridge to the south was one of the most important in the city, it connected the new with the old Heinrichstadt, and the Holzmarkt with the Kornmarkt.
