  • The Wolfenbüttler Castle is the second largest still preserved castle in Lower Saxony.
As the original moated castle, it served the dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg from 1283 to 1754 as the Wolfenbüttel residence.

  • In the 16th century, the Oker was spanned by a simple stone bridge and a simple pedestrian bridge between the large and small castle at the main portal, which was probably 20 meters further south of the castle's current bridge structure. A pier for the magnificent ducal gondolas was located near the wooden pedestrian bridge in the area of the Alter Lustgarten. The Oker and Bruchgraben were navigable to Hesse in the 16th century and Duke Julius was able to get to his residence in Hesse via this waterway.
