The poet and enlightener Gotthold Ephraim Lessing came to Wolfenbüttel from Hamburg in 1770 and worked as a librarian in the Herzog August Library.
He spent the last 11 years of his life in this city.
Lessing first lived in the castle next to the library, later in the Meißnerhaus and finally in the Lessinghaus, which is now a literature museum.
