Lessing House (Lessinghaus)

The building was built in 1773. It was built in the style of a late baroque French park palace and used as a court officials' house.
Gotthold E. Lessing lived here from 1777 to 1781.

The poet and enlightener Gotthold Ephraim Lessing came to Wolfenbüttel from Hamburg in 1770 and worked as a librarian in the Herzog August Library.
He spent the last 11 years of his life in this city.
Lessing first lived in the castle next to the library, later in the Meißnerhaus and finally in the Lessinghaus, which is now a literature museum.
