Tips

  • Manfred 🌳

Here I would put Manfred's tip first:
It is not known when the Klug'schen Mühle was built. It should roughly match that of the Wilenstein castle ruins. On 08/08/1842 Johannes Klug from Hornbach leased the mill in order to buy it on 02/20/1851 with meadows and fields. Since then, the mill has had a double name in the vernacular: "Wilensteiner" and "Klug’sche Mühle" as company names. The Klug family has a tradition that goes back over 150 years. As was customary at the time, the mill was operated together with a bakery. The "Klug’sche Mühle" in the Karlstal valley in Trippstadt is again a very popular destination.

Nicely located. With a small weir and a mill pond. There is a kiosk outside for those who do not want to stop for dinner.
We haven't tried either one - there was a smell of frying fat in the air ...

The Klug’sche Mühle is the fifth station on the Eisenhüttenweg in Karlstal. It is the oldest mill in the Moosalbtal and has changed hands several times over the years. Between 1842 and 2014 the mill was owned by the Klug family, who also ran a restaurant.

The mill appears for the first time as a ban mill for the County of Falkenstein. No data are known about their history or the first years of operation. The only thing that is certain is that it is the oldest mill in the Moosalbtal. In the Bannmühle on the Moosalbe, the grain of the farmers living in the surrounding communities was ground. The landlords had the sole right to build and operate this mill. It was mainly used in the Middle Ages as a grain and oil mill for Wilenstein Castle and the surrounding villages.

Like some of the former mills and hammer mills, the Klug'sche Mühle or Wilensteiner Mühle is a gastronomic facility. On the way through the valley of the Moosalbe, including the Karlstal Gorge, it offers an ideal stop for refreshments.
