The Sendlinger Tor in Munich was built in 1308 and was originally a gate in the larger, second city wall, which was built in the 14th century. It is at the southern end of Sendlinger Straße, right on Sendlinger-Tor-Platz. Other gates in this wall were the Karlstor and the Isartor, which the Sendlinger Tor originally looked like. In 1810, however, the middle gate tower was demolished and in 1906 the three arches between the side towers were replaced by a single one. A remnant of the city wall can still be seen at the Sendlinger Tor, which then ran up Herzog-Wilhelm-Strasse. Next to the gate is the Sendlinger Tor film theater, the oldest cinema in town.
