The Viktualienmarkt is located south of the Church of the Holy Spirit and east of the Parish Church of St. Peter. Its tower, popularly known as "Alter Peter," offers an impressive view of the Old Town. The market owes its name to the ancient word "Viktualien," which simply means "food." Here, we find 110 diverse market stalls spread over an area of approximately 20,000 square meters.

Passing the market, we reach the Schrannenhalle (Schrannen Hall). Built by Karl Muffat in 1853, it was Munich's first iron-framed building. The hall was dismantled in the first quarter of the 20th century and rebuilt in a shortened form in 2005. Today, delicatessen from Italy is sold here.

The street along the Viktualienmarkt is largely car-free. Only buses and taxis are permitted here. Cyclists are permitted to use the lowered section of the roadway.

It's worth drifting from stand to stand here.

The Viktualienmarkt (pronounced: Fiktualienmarkt) is a permanent food market (or Viktualien, in the old days) in Munich's old town. It has been held daily since 1807, except on Sundays and public holidays. The appearance of the more than two-hectare site is characterized by permanent stalls, some of which have large displays. There are also a few seasonal stalls. The market stalls are arranged in several sections around a beer garden. The site is also characterized by Munich's central maypole and several fountains. In addition, the smaller Pasinger Viktualienmarkt, with 400 m² of retail space, has been held in the Munich district of Pasing since 1907.
