In 1908 the chapel was removed at the expense of the Counts of Nesselrode-Reichenstein and brought to Herten. It was carefully rebuilt on the forecourt of the castle using bricks from the Grimberg brickworks, which was located to the east of the Bleckkirche.

The chapel has been recently renovated and captivates with its simple beauty.

The chapel, which today stands on the forecourt of Herten Castle, has a turbulent history, first as a castle chapel to Grimberg and later as a castle chapel in Herten. The Grimberg chapel on the outer bailey had Ritter Wennemar built and equipped in 1328. It was a private church of the lord of the castle, as it was customary at the time. The clergy were called by the owner with the consent of the ecclesiastical authorities. They first lived in the castle and were cared for there. Later they got a farm nearby as a rectory with garden, fields and pastures.

The interior of the chapel was renovated at the time of the owner Heinrich Knipping around 1570 in the Renaissance style and furnished for the Protestant worship. About 200 years later, in 1738, the Counts of Nesselrode-Reichenstein had a larger church built for the Protestant community in the "Bleck", a free square on the Emscher, today's Bleckkirche (near the Gelsenkirchen zoo).

The castle chapel itself has been renewed since 1729 according to the plans of master builder Johann Conrad Schlaun, and has a baroque-style portal bearing the year 1747, probably the year of completion of the renovation. The choir stalls, the altar and tabernacle hermitage of the chapel were made in the workshop of the famous master carpenter Schild in Münster.

The masonry of the three-nave chapel is from ancient times. Schlaun left it largely unchanged. In 1908 the chapel was removed at the expense of the counts of Nesselrode-Reichenstein and brought to Herten. On the forecourt of the castle, it was carefully rebuilt using bricks from Grimberger Ziegelei, which was located east of the Bleckkirche, and was preserved for posterity. The interior of the chapel also comes from the old castle chapel of Grimberg: the altar, the communion and knee benches, the patronage seats and the organ case. Since the old altarpiece came to the Bleckkirche, a new altarpiece was created by the artist Anton Kappers.
