The inscription on a separate plate reads: “In memory of the forester of Dansweiler, Ferdinand Sonnenschein Ferdinand Sonnenschein was born on November 3rd, 1811 in Gerresheim near Düsseldorf as the eldest of 7 children. After his military service and training, he became a forester in Dansweiler. On May 27th, 1846, he caught a poacher in the Dansweiler forest in the “Krebskuhl”. But the poacher did not surrender and shot the forester. The dead man was buried in the cemetery in Brauweiler. In July 1846, the perpetrator was arrested, convicted and executed by guillotine in Cologne on September 3rd, 1847. The Dansweiler Environmental Beautification Association had the weathered memorial stone, which was intended to commemorate the terrible bloody deed, restored on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Ferdinand Sonnenschein’s death in 1996.”
