The (historic) Swakopmund railway station was one of the first railway stations in Namibia. The historic station building was built in 1901 in neo-Renaissance style according to plans by the architect Carl Schmidt. However, much of the work was completed under the supervision and guidance of architect Wilhelm Sander. In 1902, the station was part of the first route in what was then German South West Africa between Windhoek and Swakopmund. In 1972 the station building was recognized as a national monument.

In 1993, TransNamib, together with the South African hotel group Legacy Group Holdings, decided to convert the station building into a luxury hotel, the Swakopmund Hotel & Entertainment Centre.
