The "Millennium Subway" (Millenniumi Földalatti Vasút, line M1) is, depending on whether the Tünel in Istanbul (funicular) is counted as a subway, after the London Underground, the second or third oldest underground in the world and was commissioned on the occasion of the millennium celebrations for the millennial conquest of Hungary in 1896.

Decades later, two lines built with the help of the Soviet Union (M2 and M3) were added, which, in contrast to the M1, were greatly expanded even after their construction.

The big Budapest Millennium Exhibition in 1896 was to take place in the Városliget (in German: Stadtwäldchen). The transport of the numerous exhibition visitors and event guests, however, was still an unsolved problem, and so the metro plans came just right.

With only a narrow timeframe available, the approval process went down in history as the fastest of all times for a subway train lasting less than five months.

Siemens & Halske, who also wanted to build a subway in Berlin, also campaigned that the subway would be the first of the European continent and would give the city a more sophisticated character. So it was decided to complete the subway until the jubilee celebrations.
