A very nice destination and a nice innkeeper who even opens his locked door for four hikers. A really cool sock. Thanks again! And besides, the guy is great at cooking. So thumbs up and towards Hartenstein Castle.

The castle Hartenstein was probably not built before the first half of the 13th century, possibly only in the interregnum under the imperial ministries of Neidstein. This assumption is supported by the latest findings - large square with pliers holes - and relevant ceramic finds. In 1268 the castle was first documented in the possession of "Rupertus miles dictus de Hertenstein".

Great distant view, the restaurant / beer garden had a closed group on every visit, but you could sit in the shade with a distant view. Also a great photo opportunity from the parking lot side.

Great food. Really highly recommended. In addition - if you are lucky and get a window seat - a wonderful view of the route you just hiked.

                            "Dear guests,
from now on we are always closed on Mondays "

I was there of course on Monday. :-)
The castle was completely closed, not just the restaurant operation.

Hartenstein Castle was built around 1250. Of the original buildings, only the so-called Palas with extensions, the gatehouse, the well house and the small bower are still standing. With the death of Heinrich von Hartenstein, the castle fell to the Schenk von Reicheneck family in 1324/25, who defended the castle against an onslaught of Nuremberg troops in 1325. The outer fortifications built in the late 17th century were blown up after the castle was captured in the War of the Spanish Succession in 1703. Hartenstein Castle was privately owned until 2001, and in 2002 the municipality of Hartenstein bought the castle complex. Today, the castle houses the permanent exhibition "Hitting, Stabbing and Courting - the History of Chivalry in Franconia" as well as the Touché restaurant with a large beer garden in the castle courtyard. On the first weekend of Advent, a Christmas market with exhibitors from the region takes place in the castle courtyard.
