Hartenstein Castle was built around 1250. Of the original buildings, only the so-called Palas with extensions, the gatehouse, the well house and the small bower are still standing. With the death of Heinrich von Hartenstein, the castle fell to the Schenk von Reicheneck family in 1324/25, who defended the castle against an onslaught of Nuremberg troops in 1325. Today, the castle houses the permanent exhibition "Hitting, Stabbing and Courting - the History of Chivalry in Franconia" as well as the Touché restaurant with a large beer garden in the castle courtyard. On the first weekend of Advent, a Christmas market with exhibitors from the region takes place in the castle courtyard.
