It is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra and is a landmark of Mölln.
Construction is assumed to have begun at the end of the 12th or the first quarter of the 13th century, since, according to the list of the Ratzeburg cathedral chapter, the town of Mölln still belonged to the parish of Breitenfelde around 1194 and is itself mentioned as a place with a church in the Ratzeburg tithe register from 1230.
