In the middle of the 18th century, the areas for burials within the Berlin city wall became increasingly scarce and scarce. At that time, it was feared that cemeteries within the city walls could lead to disease outbreaks and therefore Frederick the Great had grounds set up for funerals outside the city walls. The Dorotheenstädtische cemetery was inaugurated in 1762 and thus belongs to the oldest remaining cemeteries in Berlin.

On the extensive grounds - now no longer on the outskirts, but surrounded by the grown city - many famous Prussian and Berlin personalities have found their last resting place.

Here are the Prussian court architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, his pupil Friedrich August Stüler, Bertolt Brecht, the famous philosopher Hegel, the Prussian court painter Franz Krüger and the Federal President Johannes Rau.

Due to the magnificent graves, which give you a special insight into the Prussian grave design during a visit, the entire cemetery is a listed building.

Very nice well-kept cemetery with graves of famous personalities from art, culture and politics.

Berlin's famous celebrity cemetery was founded around 250 years ago as a shared cemetery for the Dorotheenstadt and Friedrichswerder parishes. The area in front of the Oranienburg Gate made available by Frederick the Great lay outside the Berlin excise wall and served as a substitute for the burial grounds within the wall.
