The Catholic parish church of St. Peter is often called the "Cathedral of the Bergstrasse" because of its size, but it was never the seat of a bishop. There is documentary evidence of a parish church dedicated to St. Peter as early as 755, in the oldest document mentioning Heppenheim. The current neo-Gothic church was built between 1900 and 1904 on the site of a previous building. The six lower floors of the current north tower (probably built between the beginning of the 12th and the middle of the 13th century) were incorporated into the new building. The crucifixion group in front of the church was created in 1705 by the Aschaffenburg sculptor Anton Wermerskirch. The client was the Amtskeller (financial administrator) Johann Mackard.

The parish church of St. Peter (also popularly known as the Bergstrasse Cathedral) was completed in 1904 after three years of construction. However, the origins of the church are considerably older. A previous building is documented for the year 755, which was probably part of a refuge castle built around 700 by Franks, which extended to today's Great Market. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Peter_(Heppenheim)
