The Maxbrunnen, which was first documented in 1520, is the town's oldest drinking source. It is a sodium chloride acid. At the time of its first mention in 1520, the Maxbrunnen, then simply called "Sauerbrunnen", was regularly visited by Würzburg canons and a little later, during the second half of the 16th century, it was already the subject of scientific investigations.

Around 1575/80, the Würzburg Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn had the source redesigned. In 1678 another new version was built in a similar way. As part of the redesign of the spa facilities (1737/38) by the Würzburg master builder Balthasar Neumann under Prince-Bishop Friedrich Karl von Schönborn-Buchheim, the Maxbrunnen was included in the baroque style in the spatial division of the spa facilities.

As part of a renovation in 1815, a sunken, oval fountain parterre with two concentric flights of stairs was created. As part of this conversion, the spring was renamed after the Bavarian King Maximilian I Joseph.

A cast-iron pump room was added to the north side in 1841/1842.

Today's Maxbrunnen was first mentioned as the oldest source of drinking in Bad Kissingen in 1520. At that time it was simply called "Sauerbrunnen".

Probably the "best" tasting spa of Bad Kissingen. But you should not drink much!

In the winter there was a crib that was very nicely lit.

You get a completely different taste if you drink the medicinal water with your hands.

Nice fountain but the water is a matter of taste 😊

Bad Kissingen's oldest spa fountain, documented since 1520, then called "Sauerbrunnen" (Sour Fountain), redesigned around 1580 and surrounded by a decorative stone terrace. Renamed "Maxbrunnen" in 1815 in honor of King Max I of Bavaria.
The "fountain temple" was built in 1911.
