Friedrich Moritz Hill is considered one of the fathers of sign language. He was born in Reichenbach in the Eulengebirge on December 8, 1805 and had a varied career as a teacher. Until his death on September 30, 1874, he was head of the institution for the deaf and dumb in Weißenfels.

This bust was donated by the Weißenfelser Beautification Association in 1905 on the occasion of his 100th birthday and placed in front of the institution for the deaf and dumb on Langendorfer Straße. During World War II it was dismantled and "relocated" to the basement rooms of the institution, thus escaping destruction by the War Ministry. In 1949 the bust was rediscovered and placed on a "new" sandstone pedestal and brought to its current location.

Essential elements of sign language go back to F. Moritz Hill. From 1830 to 1874 he managed what was then known as the institute for the deaf and dumb in Weißenfels, which was initially located in the nearby Jägerhof and later in Langendorfer Straße. He wrote numerous textbooks that are still the basis for communication between people who cannot hear and speak.
