There has been a grammar school in Weißenfels for about 300 years. The first grammar school was named Gymnasium Illustre Augusteum (after the Duke) and was almost as important as a university in its time. After the Duke's death, the Augusteum declined in status to that of a regular grammar school. Later, the Augusteum was replaced by the Goethe Gymnasium, which exists today.
