In the 20th century, Heinrich Schütz was considered by many to be the epitome of Lutheran church music from the pre-Bach era. Works from his 1648 collection of sacred choral music were standard repertoire for church choirs: For God so loved the world, Grant us peace, and Those who see with tears.
