When the northern side of the Saale, today's Neustadt, was built on in the Gründerzeit, the builders planned not only to build a large number of apartments and commercial buildings, but also to build a church at the fork from Merseburger Straße to Tagewerbener Straße. But the need for a new place of worship didn't seem to be that great anymore, so the project was stopped at the planning stage. Instead, a small park was built on this site, with a fountain built in the center.
