With a height of 636 meters, the Große Ehrenberg is the highest point in the Thuringian part of the Harz Mountains. You reach the summit, which unfortunately offers no view, via the former column route of the GDR border troops. The Dreiländerstein is about one kilometer away.

The Großer Ehrenberg is located in the southern Harz Mountains within the Southern Harz Nature Park. It rises about 2.5 km west of Rothesütte and about 3.5 km north-northwest of Sülzhayn, both of which belong to Ellrich. To the north its landscape falls into the valley of the Großer Kunzenbach and west into that of the Kleiner Kunzenbach, each flowing on the border of Thuringia with Lower Saxony and forming the Kunzenbach directly west below the mountain. The eastern foothills of the mountain is the Dornkopf (579 m above sea level).
The inner-German border used to run north and west directly below the Großer Ehrenberg in the valleys of the Großer Kunzenbach and Kleiner Kunzenbach. However, the Iron Curtain, including the patrol route, led directly over the summit. There were also two operational border locks here.
