The Wendeleiche is a lookout point between Zorge and Sülzhayn.

The oak owes its name to a spiral staircase that was built in the early 20th century to reach the viewing platform built in the crown of the oak. Since the oak tree was only a few meters away from the former inner German border, the GDR border troops dismantled the spiral staircase and the viewing platform. Today, only two rusty iron structures are reminiscent of the spiral staircase.

From the parking lot at the Kurhaus in Zorge, the signposted mountain meadow path leads over the Wendeleiche to the stepmother HWN 164. From there you can also integrate the stamp spot "Roter Schuss" HWN 90 into the tour.

The spiral oak offers a shelter as a rest stop, and only about 20 meters further a bench with Brokenblick. The Wendel-Eiche records the highest elevation of the Ellricher city forest

Absolutely use the Grenzweg, although steep, but just original and leads directly past the old border post.

Well-deserved place to rest after the climb with an impressive view of the Brocken, the oak itself is of course an eye-catcher - a region steeped in history.

The Wendeleiche was in the restricted area of the GDR on the inner German border and was therefore not accessible for a long time.

The rusty iron rings that can be seen in the Wendeleiche come from a former viewing platform and the associated spiral staircase, which gave the oak its name.
