The inland dune is located in the UNESCO biosphere reserve Flusslandschaft Elbe-Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The landscape was dominated by the last ice age. Along the glacial valley of the Elbe between Wittenberge in the south and Boizenburg in the north a huge dune area with a length of about 100km was created. The Schmölener dune is the largest inland dune in Europe. One hundred years ago, attempts were made to reforest the dune so that the adjacent fields could be protected from being silted up.
